Winter Solstice 2012

Part 3 - Amesbury Lantern Procession

Restarting an ancient tradition last year, the procession from Stonehenge back to the community at Amesbury as an escort to the sacred flame, lit at sunset at Stonehenge. With a modern twist we carry lanterns which appeals to old and young alike.  This year we had to change the day for the procession to Solstice eve, simply because of the extra complications caused by the ‘Dec 21st 2012 factor’. Starting on the avenue opposite the heel stone Frank started the celebrations with a brief ceremony to honour our ancestors, celebrate our community, and salute the next generation for whom we hope to leave guardianship of a better world.

Getting ready...

Almost sunset...

It’s sunset !!!!

Fantastic !

Everyone who took part, organised, marshaled and made this such a special event again this year should feel very pleased as this is such good fun, it’s meaningful, and it brings our community together
